Many people find that feelings of anxiety, low mood and fatigue are exacerbated during the autumn and winter months. Know as Seasonally Affected Disorder, or SAD, it is thought to be linked to the reduced exposure to sunlight and longer periods of darkness that we experience during those seasons.

Because of this, many people use light therapy as a method for managing their mood during the darker months. Its a very simple process; each morning you spend 30-60 minutes in front of a powerful light that intends to simulate sunlight. It is thought that doing this encourages your brain to reduce the production of melatonin (a hormone that makes you sleepy) and increase the production of serotonin (a hormone that affects you mood).

While there isn’t yet enough evidence to say whether or not light therapy is truly effective, many people report that spending a little time enjoying some sunshine in the morning, simulated or not, does wonders for their wellbeing and mood.

Despite its small appearance, the Beurer TL40 produces a light intensity of 10,000 lux, the recommended strength for effective light therapy. However, this light box does not produce UV rays meaning it is very unlikely regular use will damage the skin.

  1. Sit as close as possible to the lamp, between 20 cm and 40 cm. You can go about your normal activities while using it. You can read, write, make telephone calls, etc.
  2. Every so often, briefly look directly into the light, since the effect results from the eyes/ retina receiving the light.
  3. Use the brightlight as often as you want. However, the treatment is at its most effective if you carry out the light therapy according to the prescribed time period of at least 7 successive days.
  4. The most effective time of day for the treatment is between 6am and 8pm and we recommend that it is used for 2 hours per day.
  5. Do not look directly into the light the whole time you are using it, however, since that could lead to overstimulation of the retina.
  6. Start with shorter periods of illumination, which you increase over the course of a week.

Note:

  • Eye aches and headaches may arise after the first times using the lamp. These will go away in later sessions, as the nervous system will become accustomed to the new stimulation.
