There’s nothing quite like spending time carefully applying your makeup, only to feel it begin to slide as soon as a hot flush hits! Here's how using the right specialist makeup can help to minimise the effects of menopause hot flushes and keep you looking fresh and feeling confident.

Menopause can wreak havoc with your skin, with changing hormones making it feel dry, flaky and sensitive. Add to that the problem of perspiration and hot flushes, and wearing makeup can be a real challenge.
Hot flushes - also known as hot flashes - are a common symptom of the menopause, which are often felt as a sudden, intense rush of heat followed by excessive sweating and blotching of the skin.
Here are some key tips for helping your makeup to stay put, while also caring for your skin during menopause.
Create the right base
It’s important to look after menopausal skin by using gentle, natural cleansing products and moisturisers. Using a sweat-proof moisturiser will hydrate your skin and create a good base for your makeup, helping it to stay in place when those hot flushes strike. You can view a range of recommended menopause skincare products here.
After moisturising, applying a primer to your face will help to smooth fine lines and reduce redness and blemishes. Many women find that using a colour corrector can help with a dull or discoloured complexion. The Live Better With community recommend Defiant Beauty Colour Corrector, which comes in a range of palettes, including blue for sallow skin, green to help cover blemishes and redness, and orange to cover dark circles under the eyes.
Hot flushes and excessive sweating can quite easily cause foundation to slip. If you wear foundation, try opting for a long-lasting liquid version rather than powder, and only use as much as you feel you need to.
Use waterproof eye makeup
When it comes to eye makeup, start by applying a primer over the lids to help your eyeshadow stay in place. It’s also a good idea to choose a waterproof mascara and smudge-free eyeliner, to avoid risking that panda look when you’re feeling the heat.
The Live Better With community recommend Defiant Beauty Mineral Eyeliner and Mineral Black Mascara, which are highlighly pigmented and provide long-lasting definition, while also being kind to sensitive skin. Make sure you apply plenty of eyeliner to the roots of the top lash line.
During menopause, your eyebrows can also begin to look more sparse. Using an organic eyebrow pencil, such as the Lavera Eyebrow Pencil, will help to give your eyebrows lasting definition, while also nourishing the skin. Meanwhile, for thicker, fuller-looking brows, the award-winning WUNDERBROW eyebrow gel is waterproof and smudge-free and contains a unique PermaFix gel that’s designed to stay put.
Choose a lip colour that lasts
Lipstick can be another casualty of hot flushes and excessive sweating, which can cause your colour to bleed, smudge or run.
Exfoliating your lips and applying a moisturising lip balm will help to condition them and provide a smooth surface for applying your colour. Using a lip liner around the edges and across the surface of the lips beforehand can also help to stop smudging and running.
Meanwhile, opting for a lip stain or gloss rather than a traditional lipstick will add a splash of colour to your lips, while also staying in place. The Live Better With community recommend Defiant Beauty Lip Gloss, which contains a buttery, highly pigmented formula that will accentuate your lips and leave them feeling in great condition.
